Facebook Tests 'Downvote' Option for Flagging Abusive Comments
Facebook is testing a new characteristic to let you apace report abusive comments to the company.
On Thursday, a mysterious option called "downvote" began to announced over the platform. Only a select number of test users have admission to it, but the role is found on any annotate made on public page posts.
Despite the name, the function is goose egg like Reddit's own downvoting pick, which can demote questionable content further down the comment section. Facebook's own spin on the downvoting is more almost flagging down inappropriate or offensive posts.
Currently, a user tin report an abusive comment over the platform by clicking on the "..." next to it and selecting "Hide comment." Facebook volition so let you lot alert the company well-nigh the postal service, but the whole process isn't exactly intuitive.
In contrast, the company's downvoting feature gives you a clearer artery to complain nearly a comment. Once clicked, the selection will automatically hide the annotate from view and ask why you had a problem with it. 4 answers are given including offensive, misleading, off topic and other.
Still, Facebook created some confusion with the test characteristic by naming it "downvote." This prompted speculation that the visitor was virtually to have a folio from Reddit and implement bodily comment downvoting.
Facebook stressed the function is nothing akin to a dislike button.
"We are not testing a dislike button," the visitor said in an email. "We are exploring a characteristic for people to give us feedback well-nigh comments on public page posts."
Christina Hudler, who lives in Jacksonville, North Carolina, was among the Facebook users who noticed the mysterious feature pop up on Thursday. She too thought the test feature was similar to Reddit'south downvoting function.

Nevertheless, Hudler said abusive comments can be problematic on Facebook. She herself is the owner of a social media marketing agency called Hudler Social.
"Correct now when people see an irrelevant or nasty comment all they tin can do is angry react or go out a comment," she told PCMag. "And those things really push it up in the comments."
Whether Facebook will make the downvoting characteristic official one day is unclear, only the company has vowed to make the platform meliorate for society. It intends to do so by curbing corruption over the platform and making sure the service tin can build online communities as opposed to wasting people's fourth dimension
